Phase 1:
Expert Physical Fitness Assessment

Phase 1 occurs on Test Day 1.

The Expert Physical Fitness Assessment (EPFA) is designed to assess the physical fitness of Soldiers in a way that is relevant to the tasks that they will be required to perform in combat. The assessment is also designed to be challenging and to motivate Soldiers to maintain a high level of physical fitness.

The EPFA consists of seven events:

  1. One-mile run
  2. 30 "Dead-stop" push-ups
  3. 100-meter sprint
  4. 16x 40-lb sandbag lift
  5. 50-meter water can carry
  6. 50-meter movement lane (25m high crawl, 25m 3-5 second rush)
  7. One-mile run

The EPFA must be completed in 26:30 for EIB.
The EPFA must be completed in 30:00 for ESB.
